Albums of the Week (Issue #17)
March 1st, 2026 - March 7th, 2026
1) Henry Cow - The Henry Cow Legend
Avant-Prog - 1973
The debut of this English experimental rock band is highlighted by its lack of rhythm and controlled chaos. Despite its unusual time signatures and unpredictable direction, the band shows absolute skill, handling musical complexity with impressive results.
2) Meredith Monk - Dolmen Music
Chamber Music - 1981
From the multi-disciplinary career of Meredith Monk, her 1981 album is a fine record from start to finish. With its very sparse instrumentation to its epic titular track on the second side of the vinyl, Meredith Monk explores the range between the highs and lows as well as the funny and tearful with the greatest musical instrument of all: The human voice.
3) Negativiland - Helter Stupid
Plunderphonics - 1989
Functioning as a sound collage, Negativiland created an experimental satire on news media that remains fresh and relevant. With its hilarious gags and intense use of different samples, the album is a mental asylum of laughter and news media.
4) Chumbawamba - WYSIWYG
Pop Rock - 2000
From the band's anarchist punk origins, Chumbawamba created this unusual pop oriented record that takes satirical jabs against pop culture and the music industry. Though it was nowhere near as successful as the band's 'Tubthumper,' the band continues to play with style and form and defy rules in this album. Pop music on its surface but punk in its very core.
5) pilotredsun - Achievement
IDM - 2016
Mostly well known for their YouTube animation videos, pilotredsun also made a career with music including this impressive debut album. The music itself touches on a complex emotion for listeners, evoking nostalgia, melancholy, joy, surrealism, and others blended into a fuzzy, strange experience.
