1) Gustav Mahler/The Philharmonia Orchestra/Otto Klemperer - Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection"
Romanticism - 1963
A stellar recording of one of the greatest symphonies in music. Conducted by the great Otto Klemperer, this recording of the Resurrection Symphony explores the complex feelings of death and the existential questions of living that Mahler asks of his listeners. From the most dramatic sounds of despair, Mahler's grand symphony moves mountains with one of the most expressive, overwhelming endings in all periods of music.
2) Elis Regina - Elis
MPB - 1977
An amazing record by one of Brazil's finest. Though her career was tragically cut short 5 years later, this album among many others have withstood the test of time and have become well adored classics in Brazilian culture. Also features a cover of an Ivan Lins track ("Qualquer dia"), who is also another amazing MPB (Brazilian pop music) artist to check out.
3) No Trend - Too Many Humans......
Noise Rock - 1983
Coming from the same No Wave scene like Swans and Sonic Youth, No Trend created this masterpiece of harsh noise rock. With thumping drums, deafening guitar noises, and screeching vocals, No Trend took an exciting next step for punk music when this came out in '83.
4) Scarface - Mr. Scarface Is Back
Gangsta Rap - 1991
Scarface blew open the doors of the rap scene when his debut came out in '91. With a blend of the gruesome and the personal, Scarface's realism in this album is an outline of his amazing legacy, establishing him as one of the greatest rappers from the early days of rap.
5) 東京酒吐座 [Tokyo Shoegazer] - Crystallize
Shoegaze - 2011
This Japanese shoegaze band came out with their explosive debut, wearing the My Bloody Valentine influence on its arm. Noisy yet dynamic in tone, this album has everything that shoegaze fans could ask for.
